Re: More of Glasgow falls down

What were the white boxes in the upper windows of Napier House for? I could be wrong but it looks like air conditioners - was there something on that top floor which needed a lot of cooling down? They didn't look big enough for that - although maybe they were about the size of a gas boiler balanced...

Re: Freeview

If you're going to use a booster, use a masthead one that goes right at the aerial. There's no point picking up a weak signal, losing most of it down crappy lossy coax, then attempting to amplify what's left. Those of you with a musical bent may be familiar with the term "gain structure" -...

Re: Model Railways and other Wee Worlds

Any reason you can't just snip the broken connector and solder the wire onto the tag?

Re: Ibroxholm Oval Demolition

I used to work on the Govan Initiative microwave network, which had a bunch of stuff on the west block at Ibroxholm Oval and also the middle block in Kintra Street - now shorn of aerials I notice. There was a block in Springburn that had been evacuated and "de-windowed" but still had a mob...

Guess the roof?

Hey folks, long time no post ;-) A change of job has brought me closer to the world of urban exploration again. So, without further fuss or ado, I bring you - Guess The Roof! See if you can guess who's roof I was on today - I'll start with a nice and straightforward one. http://twitpic.com/4q8w5c" o...

Re: WiFi locations in Glasgow

Just a wee update - I've moved, and this weekend I'm moving all the radio and networking stuff out of my old flat. So, if you were using an open ap called "glasgownet" within about half a mile north of the Kingsway flats, you've got until teatime...

Detecting intruders...

Look at the control panel for your wireless router. Somewhere in there it will have something that talks about DHCP Leases - this is what it hands out to a connected computer to give it an IP address. You should have at least one, which you'll probably recognise as your own computer. If you've got m...

Glasgownet...

If you spot an open wifi node with the SSID "glasgownet", fire in. It's supposed to be that way. You may be restricted in what you can do, and you may be monitored. If you don't like that, don't use it. If you see one called "glasgownet-testing", contact me for the WEP key. If yo...

Right that's it...

... I'm firing up my CB just as soon as I find a suitable power supply. I'll be on the breaking channel, high up in sunny Scotstounhill, from about teatime this evening.

As far as I am aware wind turbines have a life expectancy of 30 odd years and can be removed. Nuclear power stations will still be costing money to look after hundreds of years after they have stopped providing power and the cost of the electricity doesn't include the decommissioning cost. Uranium ...

And kills thousands of them if something goes wrong, as the citizens of the Glorious Soviet Republic living in Chernobyl discovered. And are still discovering to this day. Would you have bought a diesel car 25 years ago? Would you even consider buying anything else now? Nuclear reactors have develo...

I actually like wind farms, i think they look nice. Id rather live under one of them than next to a nuclear power station. I have only one thing to say about that... FWUB.... FWUB.... FWUB.... 466MHz...

... is licence-free. You know those little cheapy-crappy walkie-talkies that Maplins do for 20 quid?

You're not allowed to modify them to increase the TX power, or add a proper aerial. You're also not allowed to do fun stuff like packet radio over them. Hm. Better not do that, then ;-)
