Re: Going for (cheap) lunch in the old Daily Record building

There was a work canteen in Pitt St police station when I worked there a few years ago. There's also one in the Thales factory in Linthouse (Barr and Stroud to you oldies!).

Re: Specialist Supermarkets in Glasgow

That does seem the most likely explanation. I wouldn't have touched it with a barge pole - every time I passed (lived round corner), it reeked of rotting food.

Re: Specialist Supermarkets in Glasgow

Salvanos Lebon on Dumbarton Rd has shut down now. Seems the market for hair extensions and mouldy yams dried up.

Re: Subway today

I'm pretty sure the digital signs at Partick, at the top of the escalators, do tell you when the next train is due. I saw it flashing the other day with 1 minute on the sign and sure enough, the train was approaching when I got down there. Maybe it was a mirage, though!

Re: Wimpy Bars...

I think you might be thinking of Ed Debevnick's that was where the Rock Garden is now on Queen St (is it still called the Rock Garden? I used to work in there, but not been past for a while). EB's was more of an American dinery type place than a Wimpey, as I recall it?

Re: Glasgow department stores

I remember coming up to Glasgow when I was wee at Christmas and going to see Santa at Lewis's. I got a balloon that was tied to my wrist and it got free and floated all the way up to the top floor from the food hall, where we were standing. Can still smell the foodhall!

Re: Cessnock and the surrounding area

I work in Cessnock now, so have enjoyed reading back through this thread. I work in the new-ish building on Brand Street which is now in the way of the direct path to PQ. Frequently have to give tourists (and even locals) directions to the Science Centre when getting off the subway! Bite Me is a goo...

Re: wedding venue!

I got married at the Piping Centre - it was fantastic venue. We had ceremony and reception there - reasonably priced in comparison to some other places and amazing service from everyone and right in the city centre. Been to 2 weddings at House For An Art Lover, both fantastic, definitely recommend. ...

Re: Oldest Tenements

Thanks Dazza! Mine is a red sandstone at bottom, so that narrows it down a bit :)

Re: Oldest Tenements

Just to revitalise this and ask a question (and say hello again after a very lengthy hiatus!):

Does anyone know a good online resource of finding out when a tenement was built? I'd like to know when the building I live in was built. It's a tenement on Broomhill Drive, should anyone be able to help.

Re: Good Restaurants

Bibi's on Dumbarton Road, along near Partick police station is rivalling Roastit's for me now. Perfect homely Mexican food and frozen margaritas at reasonable prices, friendly staff and just round the corner from my house ::):

Re: Good Restaurants

I managed to squeeze in 2 trips to Nanakusa before I defected to Thailand - it's really great food, good prices and a much better selection than any of the other Japanese places in Glasgow. Friendly staff too. We got an extra main course free when they brought the wrong dish to our table - so nice! ...
