Re: Obelisk in Eastwood Park

Can't help with the obelisk but I used to play under the main road where the McDonald Hotel was built & there were remains of on old villa & pool there, supposedly Roman I was told by my friend Dave Clark - but I really don't think that it was as old as that.

Re: Your favourite funny saying.

"Like a cock at a grozzet" - Similar to a male hen pecking at a gooseberry. "Up yer jacksie" - Up your Jackson & Boal (hole) "The baw's on the slates" - It's over. "On yer Tod or Tod Sloan" - On your own. "Like a sausage up a close" - Self explan...

Re: MPs expenses, SCANDAL.

No wonder M.P.s wanted to exempt themselves from the Freedom of Information Act. Oh, sorry, it's the newspaper's fault & our fault for misinterpreting & misunderstanding the exact nature of M.P.'s expenses. I hope that they all paid Capital Gains Tax when their second homes were sold. Regard...

Re: Conference on Glasgow tenement rehab (1-2 May)

You got anything to back that up? Yes, my brother-in-law was a demolisher & confirmed this to me many years ago (unofficially of course). Same way that shop owners were treated. We had 2 shops in Maryhill Road & 1 in Gairbraid Avenue near the Police Station. Once again (unofficial) policy. I...

Re: Conference on Glasgow tenement rehab (1-2 May)

Tosh.
The only reason that the tenements survived was that the Corporation ran out of money to demolish them.
Irony, they picked up an award for not demolishing them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

AH, HAPPY DAYS.

Takes me back. The Waverley, the Embassy, the Elephant, further afield to the Tudor in Giffnock or into the city for the Colosseum in Bridge Street.
Pay your money & stay there for 2 films, Movietone & sometimes even cartoons.

Loch Lomond Motorway - PROGRESS?

Several compulsory purchases of Houses on Crow were made in anticipation of widening the road. A similar plan was also introduced for Great Western Road this time by removing the pavements and widening the road. Paths were established on either side of GWR as it ran through Kelvinside. But the plan...

Re: The Peter Manuel case.

As child growing up in Brachinnie in late 1950s-and 60s Peter Manuel was the devil incarnate who struck fear throughout the East End and adjacent areas of Lanarkshire. Although only six years old I can remember the lifting of a feeling of tension when Manuel was convicted and sentenced to death. Th...

Bogside Racecourse.

A truly great racecourse, Lester Piggot even rode here, as the ground was always raceable even in the coldest winter. It closed as ICI had bought the area for expansion, which never happened & all fixtures were transferred to Ayr. I have many happy memories of point to pointing here during the 7...

Land Access in Scotland, not needed !!!!!

This new law has taken away the ancient freedom to walk anywhere that we all had & restricts us to certain approved areas if the landowner so chooses- ie. there was never a trespass law in Scotland. Before this act I could, for example, if I wanted, set up camp in my neighbour's garden & leg...

Re: Glasgow Abattoir Duke Street, 2nd. in Britain to a Shell.

A tragic tale of bureaucratic incompetence. Glasgow Corporation Markets Department owned & operated the slaughterhouse & Meat Market as well as the Fish & Fruit Markets. The original plan was to have built one massive joint market on the site of the Jacobs Biscuit works in Gallowgate nea...
