Re: Glasgow Central Hotel

Went in yesterday for birthday treat - cocktails and absinthe (2 of each.) Not cheap, but OK for a treat. The 'afternoon tea' is £12 for a whole wad of cakes and stuff, or £55 for 2 if you add a bottle of champagne. The service was slightly chaotic yesterday - they undercharged us and we told them, ...

Re: Rain, violence and chips: this is Glasgow,

P.S. Dexter I'm certainly not blaming Church-going Catholics . . or church-going anyones . . for sectarianism. I'm saying the structure of separate schooling fosters sectarianism. I went to secondary school (presumably a 'Protestant' school!!!) with Protestants, Jews, Atheists, Hindus, Muslims and S...

Re: Rain, violence and chips: this is Glasgow,

Sorry, not getting your point about whether or not Roma children are 'inclined' to attend school after the age of 12.

If they live in Scotland, they will have to attend school after the age of 12 whether that's their inclination or not.

Re: Rain, violence and chips: this is Glasgow,

Of course all segregation is bad, but, short of a massive programme of social engineering and lots and lots of school buses, I can't think of how we can stop segregating kids who live in poor areas from kids who live in rich areas. Segregating them on the basis of which particular brand of fairy at ...

Re: Rain, violence and chips: this is Glasgow,

Basically, there is no Catholic rain and there is no Protestant rain. There are no Catholic chips and there are no Protestant chips. Even the violence is statistically more likely than not to be neither Catholic violence nor Protestant violence. Let's all not go to church together, and instead we'l...

Re: Rain, violence and chips: this is Glasgow,

I have no academic basis for saying Seamus is the Irishised (new word!!) version of James, and that Hamish is the Scottish Gaelicised version of it. It's just what I was brought up knowing by a Scottish Gaelic speaking father and then informed by an Irish speaking Great-Grandfather in law. In that s...

Re: Rain, violence and chips: this is Glasgow,

i'm embarassed that I even know this. Seamus would have gone to Catholic school, because Seamus is the Irish Gaelic version of the Scottish Gaelic name Hamish, the Anglo-Scottish version of which is James. Therefore, the only person who would name their son Saemus would be a person living in Scotlan...

The Peoples Palace is good for children, but your two might be a bit too young yet.

Re: Rain, violence and chips: this is Glasgow,

And BTW as late as the 80's there was a sign in the office at 129 Bath Street that said Catholic Schools / Protestant Schools. I'm sorry, but I actually don't believe that. I was educated in Glasgow schools. My mother taught in Glasgow schools. The phrase 'Protestant School' is one I have never hea...

Re: Rain, violence and chips: this is Glasgow,

I would hazard a guess that segregated religious schooling comes out pretty high, as soon as you split kids up and introduce an artificial difference you are just stacking up problems for the future. Rather then continue to waste money on data analysis and categorisation, I would like to see the po...

Re: Glasgow Central Hotel

Got the guided tour round the newly opened Central Hotel at Doors Open Day (unfortunately my photos are a bit shite so I'm reluctant to post them here.) It's looking brilliant, and I had resolved to go to the Champagne Bar myself for my birthday cocktails this year. The modern chandeliers are fantas...

Re: Rain, violence and chips: this is Glasgow,

Egg Man, so far as I know (!) they only ever did this six month snapshot and no longer-term analysis was ever done. I'll try to find out. http://www.copfs.gov.uk/About/Departmental-Overview/diversity/racist-crime/Analysus (more recent stats, but far less detailed). http://www.scotland.gov.uk/Resourc...
