I'm pretty sure it is due to be demolished to make way for the motorway. A real shame coz it's a fantastic building (Category B Listed). I find it difficult to believe that they need to take away the whole thing to make way for the motorway, but then road engineers like to have large swathes of empt...

Considering the dubious precedents set by the redevelopment of the Ascot and the Tolledo - it see bizarre that they are going for total demolition. On face value it looks as if it would be relatively easy to incorporate the entrance archway & flanking turrets. I shall make sure that the AHSS are...

I think Provands Lordship claims to be the oldest house in Glasgow. But I think the general reckoning is that the cathedral is the oldest building.

It's amazing how much of the original detailing is still there.

Shame it wouldn't be for much longer.

Re: Clyde Bridges

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v181/pgcc1993/rclyde21.jpg To the far right of the photos - the wee building with the green copper dome, was (I think) the seaman's institute - Just realised that sounds a bit dodgy. Anyway - it was a listed building, ... but it was cleared away to build the "lovel...

Yeah - it was an interesting talk. I feel quite ashamed about my ignorance about Paul Rudolph & his significance - The Yale architecture building is amazing. Interesting as the Paisley civic centre is, it doesn't really stand up to comparisons with Rudolph's work. PS - Interesting to meet you es...

The rumour I heard was that the road layout had been redone & that scotway didn't necessarily have to move, but that the developers wanted to move it anyway. Not sure where I heard it, and info may now be out of date.

As part of its restoration , the square's asphalt surface has been coated to protect it from the damage caused by dropped chewing gum From the BBC web link above I don't really understand how anyone could describe what they have done as "restoration". At least the Herald chose their words better.

Absolutely shocking. From the way these people talk you would think that there was a shortage of empty sites. And it's not as if we don't have enough crap unlisted buildings that could be demolished & redeveloped instead. Virtual record - my arse. I suppose one advantage is that the tourists wou...

From today's Building Design Magazine . . . http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v521/bpw/Eco_Tower_by_RMJM.jpg RMJM this week unveiled images of an innovative 25-storey eco-tower for a brownfield site in the Granton area of Edinburgh. The £21.5 million tower features 45 low-noise wind turbines that wi...

The Royal Mile in Edinburgh goes straight down the hill. The Royal Mile in Edinburgh runs along the ridge - the closest comparison in Glasgow is probably Rottenrow - which apparently was one of the first developed streets in Glasgow (after the Drygate). Medieval Glasgow just didn't have the same cl...

Vacuum! - Sounds like a pretty good description of North Lanarkshire & the Falkirk area.

Maybe a Glasgow to Edinburgh maglev route would work afterall?

Schiehallon - sounds very probable. Also - The high street wasn't originally anything particularly special - it was just the street that linked the cathedral area with Glasgow Cross. I suspect the curve is to simply allow the road to curve round the hill (rather than plumetiing straight down it) and...
