Re: Past Present Vol 2

It couldn't be that it's just been sandblasted clean?

Re: Forgotten Pubs & Clubs in Glasgow

Did the Old Eagle Inn remain until St Enoch was demolished? It was still open in 1976.

Re: Collegelands Phase 2??

IMHO it looks a damn sight better than a lot of other projects that have been unfinished for longer.

Re: Mitchell Library foundation stone ceremony. What is that

Definitely Andrews in this 1963 picture: http://www.mitchelllibrary.org/virtualmitchell/image.php?i=16010&r=2&t=4&x=1 Does this look familiar Moonbeam? It’s also just occurred to me that the bar is probably named after the St Andrew’s Halls, rather than being the name of the owner as was...

Re: Mitchell Library foundation stone ceremony. What is that

Drawing a blank here. I went through the Post Office Directory for 1906 looking for a bar with a similar name. There are no bars with a name like that listed in the right place in North St, assuming the picture shows the east side of North St that no longer exists. On the outside chance that we are ...

Re: Lost Retail Chains

Tandy also sold a telephone amplifier which made a reasonably good guitar distortion unit.

Re: Lion Chambers??

I see there is one of those temporary firework shops in the ground floor where Douglas the stationer was. Almost as if someone was hoping for an accident.

Re: Glasgow Bakers

The bread sounds like challah. Don't know of a Jewish bakery though. In the early 1990s there was a German bakery on Hyndland Street called Das Brot.

Re: Breweries

This is probably the best place to note that the Scottish Brewing Archive Association has a new website: http://www.scottishbrewingarchive.co.uk/

Re: One for the railway heads

Rucola, Why are you using my point to post either that (a) snide bile or (b) genuine bile. If you look through my posts in this fantastic forum I neither put Glasgow or my country down and fail to see why you have replied in such a manner. I wasn't being snide, sarcastic or even bilious. I was agre...

BillM wrote:Well Edinburgh seem to have been able to preserve their underground toilets, so why no Glasgow?

Edinburgh's council doesn't hate its citizens with the same intensity that Glasgow's does.

Re: Lost Retail Chains

Malcolm Campbell the greengrocers is fascinating. I think the Hyndland Road shop must have been one of the last to go; I remember buying stuff there in the 1990s. In their heyday they had big stores in the city centre. There was one on St Vincent St where Pret was recently and in the unit at the jun...

Re: One for the railway heads

There seems to be a tie the swings up on a Sunday mentality regarding alcohol from our government. Similar to the alcohol pricing policy the vast majority suffer. The arseholes who create a nuisance shall continue to do so as there are laws in place to prevent most of their behaviour anyway. So, af...
