Re: Tower Block Demolitions - Rolling Updates!

Apropos the YMCA / David Naismith Tower blowdown in October - there is another 'first' worth remembering. The roof of this block was the location of Glasgow's very first cellular (mobile phone) base station. It required the lifting of a pre-built portacabin containing all the electronics by crane. O...

Re: Hidden Platforms

No - I didn't understand it either. But I may have picked it up wrong - but clearly as tours of the 'Victorian Platforms/Tunnels' is planned for the future (if there is enough interest) we'll find out for sure. My interest is due to the fact if this is the cut & cover Argyle Line, then this tunn...

Re: Hidden Platforms

Well, I was one of the lucky few that DID manage to go on the tour - and all thanks must go to the Network Rail staff for organising it, and nothing to the OD folk who managed to turn ticketing into a rammy, and even with a confirmed EventBrite booking, this didn't manage to filter through to Statio...

Re: refused planning permission 1990

You would not get this from the Scottish Office. Only the Planning Dept will hold the records you require, the reason for refusal and the outcome of any appeal to the Reporter. As you have the Planning Reference, you might be able to search online, but if the application pre-dates this, a call to th...

Re: A Street Under Argyle Street

Regarding WEWW's shop - I recall being there for the opening - it shared a HALF unit on the northside pf Argyle Street (the other half was an Autio & HiFi Shop calleed 'RSC' (which was my primary interest), as this was their original outlet, before opening a second shop in Sauchiehall Street. Th...

Re: Stranraer and Stena Line

Sail UP the Clyde? Where have you been - There remains the (Summer only) service that goes from Troon to Larne, and I can't remember the name of the firm running it, but they were affilliatred to the IoM Steam Packet Co. They also ran services from Stranraer, further west round from the HSS Stena te...

Re: tunnels

Further to the Darnick Street tunnel picture - I've just seen there is an application (Planning) with GCC at the momewnt for the complete backfillung of the tunnel void, and the elimination of the cutting to restore ground level. The ouners/applicant is shown as British Rail (Residuals) Ltd - so it ...

Dalmarnock Bridge (Removed)

I had thought about posting a picture, but what's the point when the subject is no longer there! It was actually called 'Baltic Street Bridge No 5' and has been removed as part of the East End Renewal project. The substantial metal railway bridge that crossed the A749 (Dalmarnock Road) at the juncti...

Re: Glasgow Central Station walkthrough

Good seeing those pix - I used to take this route daily 30 years ago, AFTER the stairwells on the platforms were removed. This meant the corridor (for public use, as an interconnection to Hope Street) was not needed and closed off. What I do remember from the walk-though's then, were the boilers and...

Re: tunnels

Hang on - those Google pics show the route of the main track that ran from Buchanan Railway Station to sighthill under the A803 and the BREL works. Not much of a mystery there.... the circular building is the vent and access to it, but I've never seen any activity there.

Re: Uncovered: Old Shop Signage (temporarily revealed)

The burglar alarm is the real find here "Rely-a-bell" classic! I take it the "CEN" part of the phone number refers to central Glasgow, if so when did it drop out of use? Didn't really 'drop out' more a crowbar in 1964 when Glasgow and Edinburgh became the only two Scottish citie...

Re: tunnels

Anytime! For completeness, I should have added this removed bridge was of metal construction, had a large advert viewed by northbound traffic heading to Glasgow along Cathcart Road, and belonged to the Lanarkshire & Ayrshire Railway Company, who actually built the line, running as it did to Neil...

Re: tunnels

Yes - it allowed trains to run from Newton on to the Neilston line without blocking traffic using Cathcart southbound. I believe is was a freight link, but a complicated junction because of the coming together of four routes. It was simplified, and the additional bridge over Cathcart Road removed.

Re: Glasgow Central Stop and Search

However, the picture of St GeorgesX subway station was taken from the road/pavement and as such no permission is required. I just love it when some prat decides to make it his business that I cannot do something - the usual mantra (or at least spouted to me) was 'Health & safety'. It's never mad...

Re: The Subway Power House

Two observations - I was taken on a tour of the original electric system prior to its major remodelling and loss of Copeland Road/ Merkland St etc - the maintenance driver stopped the train between West Street and Shields road so we could look at the cable chanber which went off on the left (drivers...
