Re: A Street Under Argyle Street

Had a closer look the 1820’s map posted by Lucky Poet. Are we to believe that the development of the city streets is rather different around Union Street and Alston Street because it is part of Ronnie’s “urban village” and the rest is just Glasgow city centre? Looks very much like the development of...

Re: A Street Under Argyle Street

Brilliant find , Lucky Poet! The whole premise of the Grahamston Story is very doubtful to say the least. Does anyone really believe that a city centre village existing at the end of the 18th century was still in place at the end of the 19th century when the demolition squads moved in to make way fo...

Re: INTRODUCE YOURSELF

Hi conor lingus,

Brilliant first post, managed to get it locked!

You deserved a much more considered reply. It’s a bit like school here, with the nasties lying in wait for the newbies.
Don’t let it put you off if you have any other questions.

Re: The street under Central Station?

If there is any evidence that any of the buildings shown in the 1780’s map of the village of Grahamston also appear in the 1850’s map of the same area in Central Glasgow, I’m surprised that you haven’t shown it. That would have shut me up and left me satisfied that I was wrong! I would have regarded...

Re: The street under Central Station?

Another urban myth!! There was no village demolished to make way for Central Station. Grahamston had been razed a long time before the 1870’s. Here’s a map from 1783 showing Grahamston. http://www.scotcities.com/grahamston1783_oldmap.jpg It appears as a small settlement to the west of the expanding ...

Re: Glasgow Railway Termini

This map shows Bridge Street Station in the period 1891-1906, before Central Station had been extended to provide extra platforms. It was still very much a railway terminal even though some track did pass through, en route to Central Station. http://www.scotcities.com/bridgest1890_oldmap.jpg The col...

Re: Glasgow Railway Termini

Charlie, The entry in the Dictionary of Scottish Architects maintains that there were entrances from both Cumberland Street and Eglinton Street to the station. http://www.scottisharchitects.org.uk/building_full.php?id=232854 The 1913/1914 Valuation Roll has entries for 2 bars on either side of the b...

Re: Glasgow Railway Termini

Brilliant pics, Duck! I particularly liked the one where the two trains are splitting at Gorbals Junction. Gorbals Junction was situated a short distance to the north of the two adjacent Gorbals Stations shown in my earlier map. It was the point were the two lines merged. It was situated behind the ...

Re: Glasgow Railway Termini

Cheers guys, much appreciated. After I started researching into Duck’s latest post, I stumbled across references to Main Street Station, Gorbals, which I didn’t know much about . http://www.scotcities.com/mainst_oldmap.jpg Main Street was the last station on the line from Paisley to the temporary te...

Re: Glasgow Railway Termini

My fault entirely for the confusion, Duck, I’ve replaced the picture with a view from the corner of Eglinton Street and Cumberland Street, showing the bridge over Eglinton Street, rather than the derelict bridge over Cumberland Street. I think the travelling public were even more confused at the tim...

Re: Glasgow Railway Termini

http://www.scotcities.com/porteglinton_oldmap.jpg A close up view of Port Eglinton, where the canal terminated. Apparently the towpath was wide enough for double-harnessed horses to pull the barges along the water, so there was plenty of room for a double track once the canal had been filled in. Th...

Re: Glasgow Railway Termini

Rucola, Gorbals Station, which replaced South Side in 1877, was situated in Hospital Street on the other side of Cumberland Street from the Brazen Head. The Barrhead line was extended to terminate at the new St Enoch Station and a new bridge was needed over Cumberland Street. http://www.scotcities.c...

Re: Glasgow Railway Termini

Cheers, Duck! The labels do help to keep a grasp of where everything is or was. What was obvious to the punters 150 years ago can sometimes be hard to decipher. Photography was in its infancy in the 1850’s, so your not going to get too many pictures of the time. Gorbals and Kingston, where the two s...

Re: Glasgow Railway Termini

I’ve been having a wee look at the south side railway stations at the time before the bridges across the Clyde leading to Central and St Enoch stations were built. The two main passenger stations at the time were Bridge Street and South Side. The two main freight terminals were at General Terminus Q...
