Re: Smudge, People's Palace cat

This was the first time I had heard about Smudge! If you do a quick Google there's an article about her published in an Ohio newspaper from 1988 - she truly was an international phenomenon! http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=PJFPAAAAIBAJ&sjid=o1EDAAAAIBAJ&pg=6050%2C6315406 Thanks for that...

Re: The Inn On The Green

Community Cnl: Bridgeton And Dalmarnock (Inactive) In a situation where a Community Council is (Inactive) does anyone know just who has the right to object to any given set of proposals? My (limited) experience of Community Councils (CC) is that the automatic response to any development proposals i...

Re: Smudge, People's Palace cat

Resurrecting an old thread here - don't know if there's anything more recent? Anyway, have just discovered that there is now a kind of "memorial" to Smudge at the People's Palace, tho' easily missed - it's on one of the flagtones at the side entrance near where picnic benches are. don't th...

Gary Brown wrote:The Glasgow Green one is pretty good. It's been out for about two years now. Just not easily found.

Really? Certainly been well-hidden as I've collected most of them and it's just about a month ago I saw the Green one for the first time.

Betty McAllister of the East End

I'm doing a bit of research on Betty Mac, the Calton community activist who died in 2009 - it's for an East End Heritage Walk being developed by GWL. Anyone on here got any memories or knowledge of Betty or photos of any of her escapades - e.g. the time she had local kids wrapped up in bandages that...

Re: Press

2. Press standards are awful particularly amongst the tabloid press (though the Hearld isn't much better). Its not all about phone and e-mail hacking either. The general standard of reporting is simply awful. ? The Evening Times has gone steadily downhill over the years - doing some research recent...

Re: Victorian era industrial buildings still standing

............. Sorry to bring up an old(er) thread with questions not even related to the main topic ( ) ............. Speaking purely for me, a relative newcomer, I welcome people resurrecting older threads I've missed. There's just soooooooooooooo much on HG it's impossible to take it all i...

Re: Partick becomes part of Glasgow

4th November 1912 according to Robert Paul in his Partick Anecdotes - he quotes William Greenhorne from his "History of Partick", published in 1928 At midnight on the first Monday of November 1912, the Burgh of Partick ceased to exist. While the Burgh organist played "Lochaber no More...

Re: St. Mungo Heritage Trail

I've picked up a number of them over recent months and I haven't seen that one before - will look out for it. They have them for a number of parks, plus the Necropolis & the Southern Necropolis (think I've seen that one tho' don't have it), also one for Calton and one for Bridgeton. Excellent le...

Re: staffed lifts

Watt Brothers was the last one I remember being in - think it was just a few years ago, but as I do lose track of time these days, it's probably much longer :?

The other thing that WB retained quite late on was the money getting sent in a tube to the cashier on another floor.

Re: British library digitising old newspapers

There's free access to this site in Glasgow libraries or from home by typing in your library card number. Not sure if it gives access to the entire site or just some of it - haven't got round to exploring it yet. http://www.glasgowlife.org.uk/libraries/24-hour-library/Pages/home.aspx

Re: Buildings at Risk Register (BARR).

Saw in the Glaswegian to day that they're renting out rooms at the QM Drive building - just charging £45 p.w. but it's to save it from being vandalised or squatters moving in.

Seems a good idea so long as they''re exercising a bit of discretion on who they allow to rent :)
