Re: Glasgow Civilian War Graves Riddrie Park Cemetery.

Thanks for your contribution John. Unfortunately, your comments are not connected to the civilian war graves at Riddrie Park Cemetery. The aircraft crash you witnessed (probably) in May 1941 was a German JU88 bomber that crashed on Blairskaith Muir south of Lennoxtown. Of it's crew of 4, 2 bailed ou...

Re: Glasgow Civilian War Graves Riddrie Park Cemetery.

Thanks for your response. However, the links you kindly provided, don't link-up with this east end burial...which is the original mystery. With apparently no east end casualties (ref: Mitchell Library) the reasoning as to their interment in Riddrie Park Cemetery remains unexplained. Please do keep al...

Re: Glasgow Civilian War Graves Riddrie Park Cemetery.

Thanks for the replies. RAF Bishopbriggs wasn't ever bombed and wasn't in fact any kind of aerodrome. It was purely a barrage balloon maintainance unit. Also, the servicemen there (including the CO) did occasionally die from natural causes. They are buried in nearby Cadder Cemetery along with the cr...

Glasgow Civilian War Graves Riddrie Park Cemetery.

I have long tried to reason why 10 "unidentified persons" from the March 1941 Glasgow bombings are buried in Riddrie Park Cemetery. I noticed this single grave holding 10 civilians back in 1966. No internet back then...no means of easily researching. My quandary is: why were these unfortun...

Re: Danger from old mines and mineshafts

I was once advised by a relative who worked with the Gas Board that old mine shafts were rountinely "sealed" by depositing loads of old railway sleepers down the shaft until a logjam occured. Thereafter huge amounts of concrete were poured into the top of the shaft until "sealed"...

Re: Monkland Canal prior to motorway

The 1945 black and white photo somewhat confusingly shows "high" Ruchazie as Garthamlock. Clearly wrong...but of course not your fault !

Re: Monkland Canal prior to motorway

Hi, As a resident of Ruchazie from 1963 to 1973 I think I can shed some light on your queeries. The remains you found were of Craigend House: according to old maps. It wasn't a farm, it was a private "house" of some kind or a "club" venue and quite sizeable:perhaps 10 or 12 rooms...

Re: Hidden Platforms

I'm fascinated by this. Are these platforms parallel to and underneath the upper platforms? How were they accessed by trains? This would of course surely have involved a lower level accessed by a tunnel at some point just after the river bridge? I'm no expert on Central Station but I've never seen a...

Re: Bombs over Glasgow in WW2

So sorry once again, but there were absolutely no Luftwaffe aircraft lost (for any reason) on either of the raids on Clydebank. None.
All the reference works on the subject confirm this.
Sorry.

Re: Bombs over Glasgow in WW2

I'm so sincerely sorry to "dampen" commendable interest in the history of the tragic bombing of Clydebank in March 1941 and the previous anecdotal comments. Records do however show that none of the bombers on the Clydebank raids were shot down. The only aircraft "down" (through d...

Re: tunnels

The chequered tiles you found are in fact part of the floor of the Golden Slipper Cafe which sat above the Botanic Gardens Station. The cafe closed (I think) around the mid-sixties. Great ice cream!

Re: Greenock Blitz

The JU88 referred to actually crashed south of Lennoxtown. It was attacked and damaged by the Defiant, but flew on to crash on what is now Lennox Forest. A Heinkel 111 crashed near Dundonald in Ayrshire and of course Hess's ME110 crashed near Eaglesham. My research over the years has revealed no oth...

Re: rolland st

Rolland St was pretty well where you describe it. I lived there and neighbouring Arden St (also long gone ) from 1955 until 1963. I cannot recall a childrens hospital on Rolland St or indeed anywhere else nearby. Might there be some confusion with East Park Home which was (and of course still is) ci...

Re: ABANDONED & DISUSED RAILWAYS: High St - Bridgeton Central

Great photos. You may be interested to hear that a section of the tunnels you photographed was for some time used as a small-bore rifle range. The Glasgow Railway Rifle Club was sited in the then long-closed westbound south tunnel that ran from Barrack St towards St Enoch. The range closed circa 198...

Not bombs as such, but this might trigger someone elses thoughts. I have vague memories of my granny telling me how she watched a German aircraft, which had been shot at, going down. She was watching from Germiston and looking over towards Petershill road/Springburn area. Can't remember for sure if...
