Go to the Add menu then Image Overlay. You even get to resize, reshape and rotate to fit. Takes a bit of time getting it to match up though. Managed to get this after half an hour:

I think PNG was invented to be a standardised web graphic format. But nobody would use it because they were scared it might not work. Like Alan said though, no real problems now. I've started using it too now since I want the transparency features for my stuff.
