Re: Happy 70th! All things East Kilbride

I have happy memories of East Kilbride.
I recall the date my brother-in-law Gordon Marshall was honored 'First Freeman of East Kilbride'- a great man who did a lot for the town.

Re: Hidden Cumbernauld.

Hi Cyclo 2000, never thought I would have to defend planners but here goes 'Down goes stumpy i' the ink' as the great man wrote. Planning a new town is difficult because all the good sites are occupied and only the marginal land is available,. Scotland was the home of the father of town planning, Pa...

Re: Roman Glasgow/Cathures

base for sketch.docx Hi all, the attached adds some extra data to the site of old Glasgow . I only recently found reference to the 'Girth Burn running E-W below the cathedral. What is significant about it is that it runs along the contour which, to my mine shows that it is artificial following a tr...

Re: Remains of Monkland Canal

I would wholeheartedly agree with this comment. I lived in a house on the banks of the canal 1941 to 1960. This house was located above the corporation yard opposite Firpark street. Barely a week went by without a body being dragged out of it by Ben Parsonage of the Humane Society whether accident, ...

Re: Building Glasgow Cathedral

Hi all, thought i would add to this myself as this should be an interesting aspect of Old Glasgow when the cathedral was built, we did not have the necessary expertise not only in building but in conceiving and carrying out such a structure which must have extended over 50 years or so. It makes sens...

Re: Glasgow's iron age hill fort?

Hi Sluddy, I have just looked at a 'blow-up' of the sketch from the south side and can see what you mean now. Sorry my eyesight is not so good but the hill(s) behind the cathedral can now be seen. If the perspective is accurate, it could be possible to calculate the height of the hill? I am trying t...

Re: Roman Glasgow/Cathures

Hi Ponty ears et Al, This is just an update of my views posted earlier; I have added comment about a mound knowed as'The Grummell Knowe' located at the Bell o' the Brae' and dug out in the 15C to fill holes in the road etc! This is the same location that Wallace clashed with Edward's invaders in the...

Re: Glasgow's iron age hill fort?

Hi Grahame, Thanks for your reply and support. I do understand that not everyone is interested in archaeology but the location of this site is so close to Old Glasgow that it makes a great deal of sense to me. I can understand that the land around the Molandinar and down towards the High street and...

Re: Glasgow's iron age hill fort?

file mill Hi Grahame et al, At the risk of over egging the cake, I attach an atching I recently bought of the Cathedrail and The hill from a site ' The File mill@ This would appear to have been on the Molindinar about 20M west of Millburn Street and 15M north of the current line of Alexandra Parade...

Building Glasgow Cathedral

Several aspects of the current cathedral I find very interesting and worthy of discussion. Firstly, in Melrose Abbey is an inscription which states that a mason from Paris ( John Morrow) built both that building and the high church of Glasgow, St Andrews and Paisley. Obviously he could not possibly ...

Re: Glasgow Civilian War Graves Riddrie Park Cemetery.

Anther possibility is that they are crew of a bomber brought down in the Campsies. I recall seeing the fire to the north when living as a child of 5 in Robroyston. The whole street was out and i learned some colourful language that night from the comments! Obviously not civilians but the numbers are...

Re: Glasgow Civilian War Graves Riddrie Park Cemetery.

Hi Browning, I find this post very interesting, both myself and my wife are from the east end, Dennistoun, and were alive in 1941 aged 5. had there been any local bombing we would almost certainly have known about it. The fact that these victims are unidentified is also puzzling. I do know there was...

Re: Glasgow tenements red stone ot blonde/

sandstone and basalt.docx Hi John and all, all of the buildings of of old Glasgow around the High street and Castle Street must have been built using the blond stone as there was none other conveniently available at that time. Buildings such as the College, The Tron gate, Tollbooth, Bishop's Castle...

Re: Glasgow tenements red stone ot blonde/

Hi Jock, it is just different aspects of the same subject - so 'dina fash'. I worked in the old St Enoch Hotel, or rather the civil engineering offices of BR at that time. It smelled of fart ,( that is sulphuretted hydrogen for the younger ones!) due to the smoke from the locos and our drawings were...
