Re: Nuclear war in Glasgow

I remember while a retained fireman back in the early sixties going to lectures on how to prepare for the bomb. One suggestion I seem to recall was to white wash the windows to perhaps deflect the horrendous flash that accompanied the explosion. Now how were we to stop the blast after the flash? 8O

Isle of Arran - 2am today

2 am on the Isle of Arran and you can see the lights on the Ayrshire coast and snow on Goat Fell. Never did cross from my home in Ardrossan during the Winter. The Summer was another story. http://i.imgur.com/m9HnxEy.jpg Thought to be a spider's web on the lense. Had a friend have a close look and no...

Re: What song are you listening to?

Born in Glasgow, Vince Jones and his family came to live in Australia when he was 11 years old. He's looked upon as the best jazz vocalist in Australia.

Need to re-acquaint myself with the auld toon seeing I'm winging back there in a few short weeks. :) Surprised this hasn't been reported ...

Re: Bogside Racecourse

In the mid-1950s my brother and I often worked for the local farmers to earn a few bob. At one time we were working for a farmer from West Kilbride who had a tattie field in the centre of Bogside Racetrack. One day we gathered about three stone of lead covered copper wire which was scattered at rand...

Before coming to Oz in 1964 I was working in Ardeer foundry in Stevenston in the non-ferous section. The aluminium we used was from the Hillman Imp reject castings.

Ah! I was thinking along the lines of the biggest "explosives factory" as distinct from the biggest "munitions factory". Ardeer for the most part was set-up in 1872 to cater to the mining industry. Here's an article from the Ardrossan and Saltcoats Herald mentioning the program: ...

Took this with my camera set to video. It's of a wee Fairy Penguin rounding up some fish before splitting the shoal and having his meal. I took it from our local pier here in Oz. You might have to run it a second time to get the whole thing in one sequence - hope it works. http://smg.photobucket.com...
