Re: The Peter Manuel case.

Was looking through old copies of the Evening Times and found this from December 1983 https://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=2mus-XyGPC0C&dat=19831208&printsec=frontpage&hl=en Publican John Waterson re-opens The Whitehall Pub as the Maltman. The Whitehall pub restaurant was the venue whe...

Re: Ruchazie, old and new

Good photos. are there any plans to build on this area? No plans. I doubt they would ever build on this area as it has been woodland since records began, albeit with a stately house/clubhouse in the middle for a period of time between the 19th century and the 50s/60s. It isn't a particularly large ...

Re: Ruchazie, old and new

I recently returned and had a look round the ruins of Craigend House in the woods at Croftcroighn Road. Spring has not quite started to bloom so a lot more can be seen in the absence of flowering trees, plants and bushes. Because it's a long time since I uploaded images my comments make more sense i...

Re: Ruchazie, old and new

I noticed from the Google Earth 1945 image that the old wall to the back of the flats in Drumlochy Road used to extend as far east as Campston Place. So I went to have a look at it to see if I could find any old remains and managed to find a few. Image of wall from 1945. Green represents roughly wha...

Re: Monkland Canal prior to motorway

I am going to start posting this information on the Ruchazie old and new thread which I have just found as this is getting really quite Ruchazie-centric, but since there was a bit of interest in the old wall in Croftcroighn Park I've posted photos of it here: Image of wall from 1945. Green represent...

Re: Ruchazie, old and new

Got this reply on the M8 thread from the helpful Browning. It looks like the remains of Craigend House - Hi, As a resident of Ruchazie from 1963 to 1973 I think I can shed some light on your queeries. The remains you found were of Craigend House: according to old maps. It wasn't a farm, it was a pri...

Re: Ruchazie, old and new

interested in the haunted hoose! where was it? Hello Mr Rat, I think your 'haunted house' might be the ruins of Craigend House in the woods just off Croftcroighn Road. I posted this in the old M8 thread. I have since found a bit more information quote="weskyman"]Just across the road from ...

Re: Monkland Canal prior to motorway

The 1945 black and white photo somewhat confusingly shows "high" Ruchazie as Garthamlock. Clearly wrong...but of course not your fault ! Regards, Browning. Thanks for admonishing me ::): The text is an overlay of present day Google Earth road map so we need to take that up with Google Ear...

Re: Monkland Canal prior to motorway

I captured the Croftcroighn Road / Park area from Google Earth circa 1945 The red line appears to be a wall, part of which exists today which acts as a retaining wall to the gardens of the flats on Drumlochy Road. The green part represents the portion I estimate to still be standing today. It looks ...

Re: Monkland Canal prior to motorway

Thanks Browning, that is a very interesting story. There are a lot of mounds in the wood which appear to be old building remains, rubble etc buried under earth. The parts that are visible look like they are just a small part of the overall structure. Most of the rubble as per the photos seems to be ...

Re: Monkland Canal prior to motorway

Thanks Brian. Someone put the following comment against one of my photos on Panoromio: britishplastering, on November 23, 2009, said: part of an old house that was lived in at one point by auld willie the farmer there used to be cows and stuff on the land behind the trees. Sometimes they would escap...

Re: Monkland Canal prior to motorway

Just across the road from me are the woods at Croftcroighn Road. When the trees are bare at winter an odd looking derelict brick structure is visible from the road. One day I took a wander over and had a wee look and found a few other similar structures. Months later I happened to mention this to a ...

Re: Ruchazie section of the Monklands Canal

Ok so we need to stick with private collections them. Well I will need to post this photo that includes some friends and relatives from the early 70's. That's the 1970's before anyone has a dig. http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f310/alexglass/GartcraigGang1971.jpg This picture was taken about 20 y...

Re: Ruchazie Section of the Monklands Canal

My family moved to Ruchazie in 1967. About 50 feet from our back garden was the Monklands Canal. There where a number of shallow crossing points along the canal and like Frank we also made a raft to cross where the water was deeper. I remember when we first moved to Ruchazie seeing the odd barge tr...
