Re: Apollo - Greens Playhouse

Interesting thread. Back in the early 70's I worked as a bouncer in the White Elephant disco. Round about this time Frank Lynch took over the Apollo so when big stars finished strutting their stuff at the Apollo they would sometimes come round to the White Elephant for a few drinks. If the Apollo wa...

Re: RIP House Of Sher

As I remember the building it will be interesting to see what kind of Mall you could make out of it. A mall conjures up selection of clean and efficient smartly turned out modern shops, somehow I cant imagine that happening here !!

Re: Lost Retail Chains

It's always the casual remarks that pull you up. I know this is a site for dewy eyed romanticists but there's more to worry about in the West of Scotland from our home grown gangsters. You know the ones who burn families in their own homes, who torture women before killing them, and get away with s...

Re: Lost Retail Chains

Yes they were good days Harry. Long before islamist terrorism and serious drug taking and all that sort of stuff but there again every district of Glasgow had its own wee shopping streets and its own cinema and pubs of course so they were vibrant with lots going on. There were trams and trolley buse...

Re: Steepest Streets in Glasgow

My apologies, very old thread but just found it. The steepest street must surely be Scott street. I remember when I was at night school at the Art school and had to lumber up Scott Street carrying my portfolio and being fair whacked oot when I reached the top and in the winter time coming back doon ...

Re: RIP House Of Sher

I remember back in the 1970s/1980s when you needed a special card to shop in Slaters Menswear. Membership was restricted to police, fire service employees sales reps etc. Rock bottom prices, good quality and great service. Always queued out the door. They used to even have a wee waiting room if the...

Re: Lost Retail Chains

Was there asho called DER or Reddifusion! DER as I remember only rented tv's. In those days it was more common to rent as tv's were very unreliable and if your tv broke down they gave you a replacement until your set was fixed. DER incidentally stood for Domestic Electric Rentals. They were in dire...

Re: Lost Retail Chains

I think Tandy was the "Shop Front" name of Radio Shack in the UK. I think a lot of the products were labelled Radio Shack, but I don't recall the shops being called Radio Shack. Mind you, I'm going back about 30 years, and I was only small then! :D I'm not sure who owns what but I'm prett...

Re: The Co-op Building...

Pedantic, absolutely not. I was delighted when you replied, it's such a long time ago. You mention a spiral staircase. I think you have it exactly and I think that why I found the whole experience sort of scary (although I very much wanted be there) I recall the stairway being spiral because we were...

Re: RIP House Of Sher

Yes both the above comments are spot on. About 6 months ago I visited the Braehead Shopping Centre near Paisley and wow what a place. We dont have centres like this where I stay up north but I believe there are a number of centres like Braehead around the Glasgow area. In Inverness we have one major...
