Re: Washington Street School.

No,no,no! Sorry Josef. Certainly no offence taken from either you or Dexter. A tongue in cheek retort, I'm afraid. I just hope to God my sense of humour isn't turning French. But I probably am still naive in having used the pic, so lesson learnt. Point taken about the telephone box - a local landmar...

Re: Washington Street School.

You are quite correct; I did say "from Scran". What I did NOT say was from the Scran website. I said I got it from the europeana site and if you care to look at the exact location, http://www.europeana.eu/portal/record/00401/EF2D4AC3A7B7605340E9D6519E2DEF3E9963B44E.html" onclick="window.op...

Re: Washington Street School.

Really interesting stuff. No 59 is still puzzling me, though I think I'm beginning to see that street numbers weren't constant-is that correct? This photograph from Scran is marked as 59 Washington Street in a 1960's photo; a building built in the 1850' s for Martin Hoyle & Co, sugar refiners. I...

Re: Washington Street School.

Sorry to be a thicko Bobby but I don't quite understand. In all the PO directories up to 1911/12 there is an Anderston Bonding Co at No 59. Taking just a couple of samples in 1903/04 and 1906/07 there is a Lowrie's at No 30. In the 1911/12 directory there is still the ABC at 59 whilst at Nos 46 and ...

Re: Washington Street School.

I had family living at 59 Washington Street between 1901 and 1910. In the Post Office Directory of 1912, the Anderston Bonding Company and Johnstone's Stores are listed at this address. However, on the Ward Roll of 1913 there are no fewer than 53 houses listed for No 59. Anybody any idea how this co...

Re: A very long shot..............

Afraid not, Dexter. It's a strange photograph- almost as if taken by a "family" camera - no special mounting, card etc. certainly no markings on it. Bridie, I did find an amzing site which has some fascinating people photos http://www.thelows.madasafish.com/main.htm#mid but Jerome's is not...

A very long shot..............

My ongoing research into the story of my uncle who died in WW1 leads me to ask, yet again, for help. I'm trying to date and locate the attached photo of said uncle (on left) and just wondered if anybody had ever seen or knew anything about the backdrop or studio that might give me some clues. The da...

Re: courts and prisons

Thanks very much to everybody for their help and suggestions. Very much appreciated one and all. I did as Ken suggested and contacted the police museum and have just received a great reply from a very helpful guy, whom I'd better leave annonymous. He wrote, " Hi David, Thanks for contacting us....

courts and prisons

Does anybody have any knowledge of the court/police/prison system in Glasgow of the early 20th century? Continuing research into my family I have come across a poor law application in which it states about one particular ancestor: "1913 Boy xxxx sent to prison one week for drunkenness" He ...

Re: Yorkhill Drill Hall

Thanks for all your help.I'm intrigued as to what happened inside the buiding! On my grandmother's Poor Law Application it states, 12.8.14, that my Uncle "had joined the Territorials". I know that he arrived in Gallipoli on the 2nd of July 1915. Does that mean that when he joined up this d...

Re: Yorkhill Drill Hall

Thank you so much, Peter and Egg Man. I was looking at completely the wrong building but the one you mention is indeed the one I was looking for. I did a google on Pearson Hall, zoomed in on the doorway and you're correct, Peter, it does ineed say 6th b/tn HLI, my Uncle's very regiment. Thank you!

Yorkhill Drill Hall

Researching my Dad's eldest brother ( I say that instead of Uncle, as people would proably not believe I could be the age and I am and yet have an uncle who died in WW One !!!) who joined the HLI 6th (Glasgow) b/tn. I believe they were based at 172 Yorkhill Street. Looking on Google Streetview I see...
