Re: West Princes Street

While I couldn't initially find any published record of it myself, I do vaguely remember being told in the late seventies or very early eighties that this building was the home of the Scottish Royal Ballet. After a search around, I found a web page http://www.scottishballet.co.uk/the-company/hq.htm ...

Re: [The] Curlers [Rest], Byres Road

cell, you note the absence of the rink by Curlers from the 1858 OS map. However, Partick Curling Club (PCC) records indicate that their club pond by the Curlers Tavern (which was only leased to them) was wanted for a quarry in 1856. Hence, the move to Peel St. It is quite possible that the rink was ...

Re: [The] Curlers [Rest], Byres Road

Sorry to have to disagree with the previous posts but the original Curling pond (after which Curlers is named) almost certainly adjoined the pub in question. The curlers described by the pub's name were members of the Partick Curling Club, which was founded in 1842. The club minutes refers to a gene...

Re: Simon Community Renfrew Street/Garnethill

Hi Bridie No the Simon office is still there. Using Google Streetview, if you just progress west up Hill St, it's the building on the south side of the road (No 135) next to the Synagogue. Looks like its a records office now. The entrance was down the lane at the side and up stairs at the back. Jim ...

Re: Does anyone know anything about this building?

According to Hume's Industrial Archaeology of Glasgow, it was built c.1877 (as a Cabinet Works) for the aforementioned John Laird, Cabinetmaker.

Re: The Goat, Partick

I'm not familiar with the Shewing Burn so that's a new one on me and I'd be interested to see the map. Here's the map: http://lh4.ggpht.com/_9Rej8kHuaNs/TMq-hsIPSKI/AAAAAAAAHnM/6bv880qhgeM/s640/Map%20of%20Partick%201820.JPG If it comes out legible, you'll see the Shewing Burn (or Goat) runs down Ke...

Re: The Goat, Partick

According to a map of Partick in the1820's (published in 1873), the name of the burn nicknamed the Goat was the Shewing burn. It flowed down what is now Keith St almost directly into the Kelvin. The site south of Castlebank St was later excavated to create Partick Central station. Another burn (the ...
