Re: Glasgow People

[A guy with his cockatiel It's a cockatoo (cockatiels are smaller). Just in the continued interests of pedantry this is [post #2]. Still, that bird will likely be a picture of health long after yon boy is mouldering in the grave. You might exect "cockies" to last 75 years in captivity.

Re: Help with Reading Old Shipping Letters

http://i460.photobucket.com/albums/qq326/BrigitDoon/Sundry/shippingextract.jpg Very useful BD! I reckon our letters were written by the same hand. You've given me some clues, re the way he joins words and has very distinctive letters eg his "d". If we all follow your example and post anno...

Re: Rain, violence and chips: this is Glasgow,

Have never minded Leeds. Or Bradford for that matter. Was first in both about 20 years ago. Went to the opera for the first time during that trip. That was Opera North in Leeds. Can't speak to the chips mind you, but the curry in Bradford was the business. Including one place in an old church which ...

Re: Digital Camera Equipment. THE Help and discussion thread.

That's kinda where this is heading. Though more likely to be sneaky trip to Singapore or Hong Kong. Both closer, and likely cheaper. Plus, either could be done en route home to see my mammy. After which trip it is no way I'd be importing a "new" camera back into Australia. Honest officer !

Re: The Walrus & The Carpenter

I have opened a toy shop in Melbourne and named it The Walrus and the Carpenter. I named it after the shop in Sauchiehall Street which I have very fond memories of. Anyway I would love to hear more about memories of the Walrus and the Carpenter. I will have to come and visit! Where are you; Rathdow...

Re: Digital Camera Equipment. THE Help and discussion thread.

Thanks LP. That was excatly the info I was after. Looks like the camera in the UK would be about 70% of what I would pay here. Maybe 80% with the lens. And our GST (VAT) is only 10%! It's a bit complicated though, because I can buy a direct import, without going through a Nikon Australia retailer, a...

Re: Rain, violence and chips: this is Glasgow,

Problem is Doorstop, chips (or Belgian fries, to give them their proper name) are supposed to be cooked twice. If frozen means the chippie has at least the chance of getting one of those cooking stages right, it can't be a bad thing. Now, can it?! Problem is Nobby, Belgian fries (or chips, to give ...

Re: Scottish Food

In this household, it's whole potatoes, rolled in pinhead oatmeal after melting butter over them. There's something about the textures of fish and mashed potato that I just don't think go together. Wouldn't necessarily disagree with your fish and mash comment Josef, it was just the way it was serve...

Re: What song are you listening to?

I'm pretty sure he had more records than that. I have a vague memory of seeing him on tv doing his 'latest hit', which wasn't at Christmas. Dexter, help please. I used to listen to Tiger Tim on Radio Clyde when I was studying for exams, thirty years ago. He used to have a request slot for his own s...

Re: INTRODUCE YOURSELF

Thanks for the tip off re walking Melbourne. I'm trying to recall which part of Glasgow this reminds me of. Hawthorn Presumably named after Hawthorn Street in Springburn and modelled on the many ante bellum houses located there. http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c376/Neeskens/nexttoinvergowrie.jpg ...

Re: Hidden Cumbernauld.

Excellent; good man. The levers are as I remember them, with the handbrakes on them that had to be released before they could be moved. Was the box decommisioned and left (and presumably vandalised?) or was it removed?

Re: Digital Camera Equipment. THE Help and discussion thread.

Cheeky question, but wonder if one of you guys could help me out? Could one of you let me know what the cheapest price in Scotland (or UK) is for a Nikon D700, with Nikkor 24-70 mm AF 2.8 zoom? Got laid off last year and now I have a new job, was toying with idea of using last of my payout to get so...

Re: INTRODUCE YOURSELF

Hmm, got a bit of time on my hands this afternoon, and realised I've never introduced myself. Born Springburn, in a tenement (no longer standing) opposite the train station. Brought up in Cumbernauld, and later commuted to Glasgow including for summer job with Royal Bank as bank messenger. Left Cumb...
